Surigao del Norte

Surigao Del Norte is known to be “The City of Island Adventures” and “The Surfing Capital of the Philippines”. It is divided into 20 municipalities and 1 city, Surigao city being its capital (Go visit Philippines, n.d.). 95.8% of the people here speaks Surigaonon as a parent language and some dialects such as Cebuano and Boholano are present (Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Cebu, 2008). Because of its location, Surigao Del Norte has played an important role on transportation and trading between Visayas and Mindanao with its main exports being wood copper, gold, nickel, and others (Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte, n.d.). One of the world’s largest nickel deposit can be found here in Nonoc islands, traces of Nickel could also be found in Dinagat group of islands (Wow Surigao Philippines, n.d.).

Demographics of Surigao del Norte

Surigao Del Norte’s population has an increasing rate of 1.68% annually. It has a total population of 422,588 people based on the 2010 Census of Population and Housing, accomplished last May 1, 2010. The population had a significant increase of 68,123 people when compared to its population of 374,465 people in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing. From the province, its capital, Surigao City, was the most populous which constitutes for 31.8% of the total population. The capital is followed by the municipalities of Mainit with a 5.8% portion, Placer, 5.6%, Claver, 5.4%, and Dapa, with a 5.3% share. The least populated municipality is the municipality of Burgos, with a 0.9% total share. (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2013)
